Brett Walker, Dip. Acu, MNZRA, Toyohari Medical Association has a passion for Oriental Medicine and philosophy that looks at healthcare with a holistic approach, treating people on an individual basis and helping them thrive in life both physically and emotionally.
Coming from an unusual beginning for a healthcare practitioner, he originally started out his working life as a signwriter for 5 years. Although this fed his artistic tendencies, he always wanted to help others in a more personal way. Deciding to put down the brush he went traveling from 1999 to 2004, experiencing cultures and philosophies from around the world. While surfing in Chile at the end of 2003, after he had been through his own personal healing process using eastern meditation techniques, he had a sudden realisation and need to pursue eastern healthcare philosophies.
“It was these ancient healing arts that look at the whole person on an individual basis while incorporating both the physical and psychological levels without separation that attracted me to the medicine.”
The decision was made to return to New Zealand to study Chinese Medicine at The Christchurch College of Holistic Healing (now called The New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine).
After receiving his 4 year full time Diploma in Acupuncture, he studied 1 and a 1/2 years part time in Chinese Herbal Medicine and 1 year in Toyohari (Japanese Meridian Therapy)with courses in both Australia and California.
Since graduation at the end of 2007 Brett worked in a busy acupuncture clinic in Christchurch for over 2 1/2 years that specialised in chronic musculo-skeletal conditions and fertility. Also covering an array of other health complaints such as stress, depression, psoriasis, digestive complaints and many others.
Brett lives in Rangiora and is married to his Californian wife, who is also an acupuncturist (primarily equine acupuncture) and currently a full time mom to their young son. They noticed the need for a full time acupuncturist that could serve the North Canterbury region. Brett has been gradually working and building up the KiSen Acupuncture Rangiora Clinic since early 2009.
He spends his free time with his family, surfing, traveling, photography and generally being in the great outdoors.
